Sri Basaveshwara, who spearheaded a spectacular socio-economic-religious movement, in 12th century, was a great thinker, philosopher, reformer, humanist and also a composer of Vachanas, a path-breaking literary form, in Kannada literature. He with the active support of over 250 like minded sharanas struggled to bring about change in our society wherein all could live as equals irrespective of one’s caste by birth or gender. Modern day thinkers and social scientists view the movement started by Basava as something   unprecedented in the history of India. The motto of the movement was to eradicate castes and similar divisions in society and establish an egalitarian community, particularly annihilating the practice of untouchability in society. As a result of the sustained spirito-religious-mystic effort put in by hundreds of like minded men and women Vachana literature came into existence. The 12th century alone saw composition of over 18,000 Vachanas being the combined production of over 250 sharanas and sharanes who are now referred to as saints. Starting from the beginning of the 12th century down to the end of the 19th century, the influence of Basaveshwara and his contemporaries has held sway over the life of the people of Karnataka which in turn transformed the region’s socio-economic-cultural-literary-philosophical-intellectual fabric of life. Studies on all that has taken place down the centuries are being made by many individuals and institutions. Sri Basaveshwara Centre for Social Change, Research and Extension, Kuvempu Institute of Kannada Studies, Manasagangothri, Mysure hopes to study all about Basaveshwara and his contemporary sharanas and the informatory literature down the ages in the modern context by way of doing research and arranging extension programs aimed at bringing change for the better in our society.

Sri Basaveshwara for Social Change Research and Extension came to be officially inaugurated on 11/05/2012 following the executive order number DV.7/95/20-10-2011 Dated 14/12/2011 issued by the University of Mysuru. Prof. Maleyuru Guruswamy, a scholar of repute in Kannada literature, was appointed as the first visiting Professer of the Center.    

      ಶ್ರೀ ಬಸವೇಶ್ವರ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪರಿಕ್ಷರಣೆ, ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಸ್ತರಣಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರವು ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ಕವಾಗಿ ಆರಂಭಗೊಂಡ ನಂತರ ಇದರ ಪ್ರಪ್ರಥಮ ಸಂದರ್ಶಕ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾಗಿ ಪ್ರೊ.ಮಲೆಯೂರು ಗುರುಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರು  ದಿನಾಂಕ : 07/03/2012 ರಂದು ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಲಯದಿಂದ ನೇಮಕಗೊಂಡರು. ಶ್ರೀಯುತರು ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರೂ ಮತ್ತು ಲೇಖಕರೂ ಆಗಿ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧರಾಗಿರುವವರು. ಈ ಮುನ್ನ ಅವರು ಜೆ.ಎಸ್.ಎಸ್. ಮಹಾವಿದ್ಯಾಪೀಠದ ಕಾಲೇಜುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾಗಿ ಮೂರು ದಶಕಗಳಿಗೂ ಮಿಗಿಲಾದ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದವರು.  ದಿನಾಂಕ : 31/07/2012 ರಂದು ಕೇಂದ್ರದ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳನ್ನು ಅಧಿಕೃತವಾಗಿ ಉದ್ಘಾಟಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರತ್ನ ಡಾ.ದೇಜಗೌ, ನಾಡಿನ ಹಿರಿಯ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರಾದ ಗೊ.ರು. ಚನ್ನಬಸಪ್ಪ, ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತ ಕುಲಪತಿ ಹೆಜ್.ಜೆ. ಲಕ್ಕಪ್ಪಗೌಡ ಮತ್ತು ಕನ್ನಡ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರಾದ ಡಾ.ಎನ್.ಎಂ. ತಳವಾರ್‍ರವರು ಸಮಾರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು. 

     ಶ್ರೀಯುತರ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಬಸವೇಶ್ವರ ಸಾ.ಪ.ಸಂ.ವಿ. ಕೇಂದ್ರವು ವಿಸ್ತರಣಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಅಂಗವಾಗಿ ಹಲವು ಪ್ರಚಾರೋಪನ್ಯಾಸಗಳನ್ನು ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಂಡಿತು. ಈ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸಗಳನ್ನು ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರುಗಳಾದ ಡಾ.ಮ.ನ.ಜವರಯ್ಯ ‘ಬಸವಣ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ಅಂಬೇಡ್ಕರ್’, ಡಾ.ನಂದೀಶ್‍ಹಂಚ್ಯ ‘ಅನುಭಾವ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ’, ಪ್ರೊ.ಚ.ಸರ್ವಮಂಗಳ ‘ವಚನಕಾರ್ತಿಯರು’, ಡಾ.ರಂಜಾನ್ ದರ್ಗಾ ‘ಬಸವಪ್ರಭೆ’, ಪ್ರೊ.ಜಿ.ಎಸ್.ಜಯದೇವ್ ‘ಬಸವೇಶ್ವರ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಮಹಂಸ’, ಡಾ.ರಾಜಶೇಖರ ಜಮದಂಡಿ ‘ವಚನಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ’ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರೀ ಸೋಮಶೇಖರ ಬಿಸಲ್ವಾಡಿ ‘ಶರಣರ ಆಂದೋಲನ’ ಎಂಬ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದರು.

    ಪ್ರೊ.ಮಲೆಯೂರು ಗುರುಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಂದ್ರದ ಸಲಹಾ ಸಮಿತಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯರುಗಳಾಗಿ ಮಾನ್ಯ ಶ್ರೀ ಗೊ ರು ಚನ್ನಬಸಪ್ಪ, ಡಾ. ವೆಂಕಟರಾಮಯ್ಯ, ಡಾ. ಸೈಯದ್ ಅಖಿಲ ಅಹಮ್ಮದ್, ಡಾ. ವೀರಣ್ಣ ರಾಜೂರ, ಡಾ. ತಿಪ್ಪೇಸ್ವಾಮಿ, ಡಾ. ಆರ್. ಇಂದಿರಾ, ಡಾ. ಎನ್.ಎಂ. ತಳವಾರ್, ಡಾ.ಸಿ.ನಾಗಣ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ಡಾ. ಪದ್ಮಾಶೇಖರ್ ಅವರುಗಳು ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ.

    ಶ್ರೀ ಬಸವೇಶ್ವರ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪರಿಷ್ಕರಣ, ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಸ್ತರಣಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರದ ಸಂದರ್ಶಕ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರೂ, ಲೇಖಕರೂ ಮತ್ತು ಚಿಂತಕರೂ ಆಗಿರುವ ಡಾ. ಬರಗೂರು ರಾಮಚಂದ್ರಪ್ಪನವರು ದಿನಾಂಕ : 10/07/2013 ರಂದು ನೇಮಕಗೊಂಡು 02/03/2016 ರವರೆಗೆ ಈ ಕೇಂದ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಅಮೂಲ್ಯ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ.
