ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Botany of the Post Graduate Centre, Hemagangothri is one of the leading plant science Department, dedicated to teaching and research activities in plant sciences.  Department of Botany was established in 2014 to study the bounteous availability of natural resources, particularly forest resources in the Malnad region of Karnataka.  The course offers an outstanding platform to understand the various aspects of plant science ranging from basics to the advanced level.  The curriculum has been designed in such way that the students should be able to take up either teaching or research as their career in future.  Every year, the department conducts minimum three days, study tour to the vegetation rich areas, various national laboratories, in order to visualize and learn the ongoing research and advancements in the plant sciences.  Students are also being encouraged to participate in several conferences/symposium organized by different institutes of the country.

In the final year of the M.Sc., programme, it is mandatory for all the post-graduate students to work on a  short-term project in the 2nd year (4th Semester), which involves various areas of research like Plant Systematics, Phytochemistry, Plant anatomy, Plant tissue culture and microbiology.  The Department has two full-fledged laboratories with good number of equipment’s.
