About DSW:-

University of Mysore established the Directorate of Student Welfare (DSW) in the year 1968. Prof. U.K. Subbarayachar was the first Dean of Student Welfare. He served in this capacity for a very long time. He built the Directorate of Student Welfare in the University of Mysore on sound footing. DSW is a statutory unit of the UoM as per KSU Act - 2000. The Director of DSW is one among the statutory officers representing in all committees of development pertaining to Students. Director is a full time officer of the Directorate of Student Welfare and by virtue of his position in the university is a member of the Academic Council.Two Assistant Directors in this Directorate assist the Director in planning, executing and monitoring the activities of DSW.

OBJECTIVES AND FUNCTIONS OF DSW:-

❖ DSW is a supporting service of the university and it is a student - care unit as well as supervision center, which serves as a bridge between students and the administration.

❖ DSW Provides hostel accommodation to the students who are admitted to the PG and UG courses.

❖ Provides ample opportunities for the expression and development of hidden talents in the students.

❖ Sponsors students to participate in various co-curricular programs organized by other universities.

❖ Arranges student-centered seminars and special lecture programs.

❖ There are 19 (18+1) hostels under the control of DSW, out of which10 are meant for PG students, 08 for UG students and 01 exclusively for working women.

❖ The physical structure of the hostels, including the maintenance of water, sanitation and electrical systems are done by engineering division of the university in co-ordination with DSW.

❖ Faculty advisors/wardens, clerks, hostel assistants and house keeping staff are maintained by DSW.

❖ Provides extra boarding & lodging charges for SC/ST students staying in hostels.

❖ Provides support grant to physically challenged students.

❖ Conducts innovative training programs to students in Spoken English and Personality Development, in collaboration with SC/ST Cell.

❖ Conducts Orientation Program and Brain Storming Workshop in association with SC/ST Cell to the students of University of Mysore studying at PG Centres of Mysuru, Mandya & Hassan

❖ Takes strong measures in preventing ragging menace at UG and PG level in the Hostels.

❖ Organizes students’ counseling and other related activities.

❖ DSW is guided and supported by an Advisory Committee comprising of Vice- Chancellor, Registrar, Registrar(Evaluation), Finance Officer, PMEB Director, CDC Director, members of the Syndicate and senior faculty members of the university.

ANNUAL PROGRAMMES OF DSW

The main objective of the Directorate of Student Welfare is to help the students to participate in various co-curricular activities. DSW conducts the following activities regularly every year:

❖ It has been organizing University level Inter-Collegiate Literary and Cultural Competitions to inculcate creativity among the students. On the basis of their performance, talented students are selected and deputed to Zonal, National and South Asian level Youth Festivals hosted by Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

❖ Conducts Debate Competition in co-ordination with the Karnataka State Co-operative Department, Bengaluru.

❖ Provides support grant to physically challenged students.

❖ Shoulders the responsibility of celebrating national festivals like Independence Day and Republic Day.

❖ Invites annual magazines from Constituent and Affiliated Colleges of University of Mysore for awarding cash prizes for three best magazines.

HEALTHY PRACTICES OF DSW:-

❖ Development of Green Belt with the assistance of students and staff.

❖ C.C.T.V. Cameras has been installed in all the hostels.

❖ Solarization of all the hostels.

❖ Installation of R.O. Units in all the hostels.

❖ Computer center facility is provided for the benefit of students staying in the ladies hostels.

❖ Provided Multigym facilities in PG Boys’ and PG Girls’ Hostels.

❖ Association with the Department of Physical Education for involving students in Sports and Yoga.

❖ Competitive Examination study center facility in UG Gents Hostel.
