About the Department   

      The Division of English was one of the earliest of departments along with Kannada and Economics to offer Masters in English literature with the genesis of Sir M.Visvesvaraya Post-graduate Centre by the University of Mysore in the year 1992.

      Ever since its inception, the Division has come a long way in enthusing students to achieve academic pursuits and excellence. The graduates from the department have been teaching at various colleges in the state and a couple of them have crossed the sea as well!

     Apart from its routine teaching assignments, the Division has introduced Tutorial System in order to train the students individually, to acquire reading skills and hone the art of communication. Counseling has also been a vital part of the department’s programme in order to cater to the problems of the students, especially the rural students. Student seminars are conducted every week in order to assess and enable the students to be active participants.

     The Division has chalked a programme in order to develop communication skills in English to the students of the other Departments of the Centre. Training the students of the Division to face competitive examinations like UGC/NET is treated as on priority.

     The Division has also held special lecture series for the students of the department Dignitaries from the various parts of the country as well as from abroad have visited the department and interacted with the students. 

     The faculties of the department are also guiding students for their doctoral degrees.
