When NSS was started in 1969, the University of Mysore was one of the three Universities in Karnataka to implement the NSS with 1100 volunteers in 11 colleges. Presently it has grown to 180 units with volunteer’s strength of 18000.
When NSS was introduced in the University of Mysore for the first time it was entrusted to the Office of the Dean of Student Welfare, Prof. U.K. Subbarayachar, was the Dean as well as the Honorary Director of NSS who gave a broad framework by framing a 20 page guidelines. They clearly stated the model inter collegiate, district level camps and started training of NSS Officers long before the Government of India thought of Training Centers (TOC).
University of Mysore has implemented Training Programmes long before the TOC’s and TORC’s were introduced in the country. Since 1992 it has started training NSS Programme Officers of the Karnataka State and organized more than 116 Training Programmes under the banner of TOC-University of Mysore till 2011 and so far the university has conducted 140 Training Programmes and trained around 4,500 Programme Officers. As the foregoing details testify the University of Mysore has a good reputation in implementing NSS meaningfully both qualitatively and quantitatively.
