M.SC Sugar Technology Course was started by the University of Mysore in the year 1993-94, the first of its kind in India. The course is designed to train the students as Production Executives to manage Sugar Processing. During the course period (4 Semesters), the students are taught allied subjects like Sugar Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Sugar Chemistry, Statistical Quantity Control, Sugar cane Agriculture and Industrial Management in addition to Sugar Manufacturing. Thus it is a course encompassing all the concerned disciplines.
The University’s endeavor is to quality staff to the sugar Industry which is the largest in the country and thus equip the nation to challenge the global competition. There are more than 500 sugar factories in the country expanding and modernizing in a big way as the thrust is on the Electric Power supplied in addition to the sugar produced. Hence, a dynamic industry like Sugar Industry needs many professionals viz., Sugar Technologists. A science graduate (B.Sc with Chemistry/Biochemistry/B.Sc (ag) /BE) can opt for a challenging career, assured of fast growth to the level of Head of an Organization.
Until now about 100 graduates have mastered in Sugar Technology and serving in various capacities throughout the nation. The intake per batch is 15 students with minimum 45% (GM & OBC) & 40% (SC & ST) marks in B.Sc (B.Sc with Chemistry/Biochemistry/B.Sc (ag) /BE). There is a provision for the industry to depute five candidates.
The Department comprises of a Professor and three Asst. Professors pursuing research on the problems of the industry. The activities of the department includes factory visits, arranging special lecturers by inviting eminent technologists from industry, and conducting seminars of state and national level in cooperation with regional Sugar factories and other departments.
