Brief History of Department
The Department of Library Science, now officially called the Department of Studies in Library and Information Science, was started on 24th June 1965 with 20 students for Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science. Prof. P.K. Patil, who later served as the Director of Public Libraries in Karnataka, collaborated with the stalwart Prof. K.S. Deshpande laid the foundation for the development of the Department.
The Department has led the library science education in Karnataka from the front by starting the Masters (1971), PhD (1976), and Integrated Masters (1992) programmes before others could do. The metamorphosis from the Department of Library Science to the Department of Library and Information Science in the year 1976 changed the complexion of the teaching with a focus on information. Further, introducing a two-year integrated MLISc in 1992, in place of one-year BLISc and one-year MLISc, was one of the bold decisions that enhanced the intensity and quality of imparting education in the discipline.
The Department has had significant teaching and research contributions from former faculty members, including Prof. H.A. Khan, Sri. T.V. Subramanyam, Prof. B. Nagappa, Prof. K.S. Raghavan, Prof. N.B. Pangannaya, Prof. V.G. Talawar, Prof. Shalini R. Urs, Prof. B.S. Maheswarappa, Prof. Khaiser Jahan Begum,Prof. Y. Venkatesha and Smt. B.C. Indira.
The department faculty and alumni of the Department have occupied coveted posts such as Director General of National Library of India, Vice-Chancellors and Professors at various universities, Information Entrepreneurs, Head/Chief Librarians at central and state government libraries and research institutes. Prof. V.G. Talawar served as the First Vice-Chancellor from the field of library and information science in India.
