Brief History of Department

 The Post-graduate Department of studies in Earth Science was started in the year 1960 under the stewardship of late Professor M.N. Viswanathaiah at Yuvaraja's College, Mysore. The latE.! Prof. B.V. Govidnarajulu joined him subsequently in the year 1961. These TWO professor were like pillars who built the Earth Science Department since 1961 which has now blossomed into a prestigious center of Earth Sciences studies in the country. The Department owes its gratitude to these two eminent pioneers whose brilliance and farsightedness made it possible for this department to attain National and International recognition.

 The Earth Science Department was shifted from Yuvaraja's College to Jayalakshmivilas Mansion at Manasagangothri - A new campus in the year 1962. The foundation stone for the construction of new building for the Earth Science' Department was laid by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs, Government of India on 20th August 1961. The PG Department in Earth Science was opened by Padmabhusana Prof. M.S.Thacker, Member, Planning Commission, Government of India on Saturday, 28th March 1964 and the staff and students of Earth Science were moved into the existing building in the year 1964.
