Overview

Genetics and Genomics:

This new department has emerged out from DOS in Zoology as new Department of Studies in Genetics and Genomics.

This Department will have the potentiality to start the new courses in due course of time. Such as: Certificate / Diploma /Courses in Genomics, Human Genetics, Human Genomics, Microbial genomics, Genes and Development, Cell and Molecular Biology and Population Genetics and  Evolution

This department is the centenary year department of the University which has enormous applications for the society.

Preamble

Genetics is a fundamental science which can be studied at all levels. The knowledge of which has become essential to unravel the mysteries of life processes that is extensively being pursued in today’s science.  The curriculum designed in the Master degree program encompasses different fields of Genetics with an emphasis on both basic and Applied aspects.  Many research laboratories and Universities in the country require suitably trained man power for research/teaching programs in Genetics.  This course will provide strong basic foundation to any modern research field. M.Sc., Genetics is an interdisciplinary course. Genetics brings in other disciplines like Zoology, Botany, Microbiology and Medical sciences under its study area.

Since the time of inception of the Department of Studies in Zoology, Drosophila has been used as the model system for both teaching and research.  The department enjoys a distinction of harboring a National facility – Drosophila Stock Centre, established in 1992 with the initial grants from Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi.  The centre maintains ~1350 genetic strains of D. melanogaster and 50 species of Drosophila. These stocks are supplied to research and educational Institutions for research and teaching purposes, free of cost.  At present, more than 200 Institutions are availing this benefit. This department is known for research in Genetics at National and International levels.  Many faculty members had advanced training in Genetics and Molecular Biology and collaborating with National and International laboratories namely, IISc, NCBS, JNCASR, Bangalore; CCMB, CDFD, Hyderabad; University of Bochum, Germany; McMaster University, Canada; University of Atlanta, University of California, Los Angeles, USA; University of York, UK; University of Innsbruck, Austria;  University of Singapore, Singapore. With the help of several research grants from DBT, DST, CSIR,ICMR and UGC good number of quality publications have been made.

With this strong background in the area of Genetics, M.Sc. and Ph. D. programs in Genetics were started during the year 2005-06 involving the faculty with expertise in Genetics. Now the 8 batches of students have passed out and majority of them are placed in different Universities and Research Institutions.
