It was in the year 1986 that the University of Mysore with the support of DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Government of India, launched a very new Post Graduate program in Computer Science called M.Sc. in Computer Science mainly to cater the demands of good software engineers in DRDO labs all over the nation. B.Sc. graduates drawn from all over India selected for admission to the M.Sc. programme through a National Level Entrance Examination, were given DRDO scholarships and subsequently absorbed after M.Sc. After the completion of an agreement for a period of 5 years, the programme has been run by the University of Mysore as per the University norms.
Later in the year 1992, another programme called Master of Computer Application (MCA) was introduced. The research activities leading towards Ph.D. in Computer Science got initiated soon after appointments of regular faculty members in the year 1996. In the years 1998, 2000 and 2001, three more programmes viz., M.Tech. in Computer Science and Technology, M.Sc. (Tech.) by Research and M.Tech. in Computer Cognition Technology were also started respectively. The M.Phil. in Computer Science and Technology programme was initiated in the year 2016
The graduates of all the programmes have been doing very well in Research Labs, Industries, and MultiNational Companies across the globe. The Department is proud to be the very first Department in the State of Karnataka to offer various Post Graduate Programmes and Research in Computer Science. Further, the Department is the first department in bringing in the culture of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) Pattern of Education in the entire campus as early as in the year 2000
The Department was recognized by UGC under Special Assistance Programme (SAP) level DRS-I on the thrust area of Document Image Forensic in the year 2011. The Department also has housed a special laboratory called High-Performance Computing (HPC) as a campus facility in the year 2012
