The School of Law, University of Mysore

The School of Law, University of Mysore, established in 2006, has steadily evolved into a distinguished institution for legal scholarship and professional training in India. Since the initiation of its flagship five-year integrated B.A.LL.B. (Hons) programme in 2007, the School has demonstrated a sustained commitment to academic excellence and pedagogical innovation. Operated under a self-financed model, the programme has secured approval from the Government of Karnataka and enjoys formal recognition from the Bar Council of India (BCI), New Delhi, thereby aligning its academic structure with national regulatory standards for legal education.

At the core of its academic philosophy is the cultivation of a legal consciousness that is firmly rooted in constitutional values such as equality, human dignity, and social justice. Through an integrated curriculum that balances doctrinal instruction with experiential learning, the School aspires to nurture legal professionals who are not only competent in substantive and procedural law but also critically engaged with the broader socio-political dynamics of justice delivery. The faculty profile, comprising eleven full-time scholars with doctoral qualifications, supported by fourteen guest faculty members and invited lecturers with UGC-recognized credentials, fosters an intellectually stimulating environment conducive to advanced legal learning and research.

The institutional infrastructure reflects the University's robust investment in legal education, with the School housed in a dedicated, state-of-the-art academic facility constructed with a financial outlay exceeding ₹6 crores, sanctioned by the University of Mysore. As part of its global academic engagement, the School promotes faculty and student mobility through partnerships and exchange programmes with nationally and internationally reputed law schools, thereby broadening the horizons of legal education and comparative legal inquiry.

In alignment with its vision to become a centre of excellence, the School of Law integrates clinical legal education and community engagement into its academic mandate. It actively promotes social responsibility and legal literacy through structured legal service initiatives aimed at marginalized communities. Internship programmes, embedded within the curriculum, provide students with critical exposure to diverse legal environments, including the judiciary, law firms, corporate legal departments, non-governmental organizations, and governmental agencies. These engagements are not merely peripheral but constitute a core component of the School's praxis-oriented legal training, enabling students to develop interdisciplinary competencies, enhance their advocacy skills, and build professional networks that support meaningful career trajectories in public, private, and transnational legal sectors.

The School further underscores its academic strength through its legal information infrastructure. The Law Library, organized with an open access system, houses an extensive and meticulously curated collection of legal commentaries, statutory materials, scholarly journals, law reports, and bound volumes, serving as a vital resource for legal research and doctrinal exploration. In addition to the University’s Central Library, students are granted exclusive access to premier digital legal databases such as Manupatra and IndiaStat, ensuring that both traditional and contemporary legal materials are readily available for academic inquiry. Full access to e-journals and online resources is provided to all enrolled students, reinforcing the School’s commitment to resource-based learning.

At present, the School offers two integrated undergraduate programmes: the five-year B.A.LL.B. and the five-year B.Com.LL.B., each designed to cater to students with varied academic orientations while maintaining the rigour of a comprehensive legal education. The eligibility criteria mandate a minimum aggregate score of 45% for General Merit, 42% for OBC, and 40% for SC/ST candidates in PUC or 10+2 or equivalent examinations recognized by statutory education boards. Age restrictions, as per regulatory norms, stipulate that applicants must not have attained 20 years of age (for General Category) or 22 years (for SC/ST candidates) as of the closing date for application submission. Therefore, the School of Law, University of Mysore, continues to assert its relevance and leadership in the domain of legal education by combining academic rigour, professional training, and societal engagement. It remains steadfast in its mission to develop legally literate, ethically grounded, and socially responsive legal professionals who are well-equipped to navigate and transform the evolving landscape of law and justice in India and beyond.
