Brief History of Department

The Department of Studies in Jainology and Prakrtit was established in the year 1971 with a generous funding from Shri Sahu Shantiprasadji, founder of BHARATIYA JANANAPEETHA during the Vice-Chancellorship of eminent Kannada Literature, Karnataka Rantna Prof. D Javare Gowda, The belief that the Jain studies and the rich Prakrit literature held immense ability to provide time- tested solutions for the present day maladies prompted the intellectuals to establish the Post Graduate Department of Studies in Jainology and Prakrit in the University of Mysore.  Prakrit, the language of ancient civilization, regarded as the mother of all modern languages, has a unique specialty of immense literature covering each and every subject of human interest, without adhering to and religion in Particular.


            Dr. A.N.Upadhye, eminent scholar of Prakrit is the founder Professor who contributed immensely to the development and growth of this department.  The department that had no independent building for over four decades has now found an independent existence.  Today the long cherished dream of housing the Department of Studies in Jainology and Prakrit in an independednt building has been realized with the efforts of the Ex- Chairperson of the Department Prof.Padmashekar under the stewardship of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. V.G Talawar.  Apart from the major grant allocated out of the Special assistance received from the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Govt.  of India under the Institution of Excellence and the contribution from the University, the generous contributions and blessings by the religious heads like His Holiness Jagadguru Karmayogi Swastishree Charukirti Bhattarakji, Bhuvanakeerti  Bhattarakji, Devendrakeerti Bhattarakji, Jayagaccha Munishree Dr.Padmachandraji, Padmabhushana Dr. D Veerendra Heggade and Others have helped the University of Mysore to set up an independent department with modern infrastructure of Classrooms, library, computer room, auditorium and museum.
