There are arguments for and against the corporate participation in social development. This    report states that the compulsions for corporate philanthropy in the Indian context are more compared to other countries. The claim is that unfortunately corporate philanthropy is not a well researched area. Hence a study on corporate philanthropy is very urgent and important. Accordingly the report embarks upon the research with objectives to understand the historical perspective and development of corporate philanthropy in India, to analyse the corporate sector in Karnataka, to study the policies of companies on philanthropy, to analyse the causes supported through corporate philanthropy and motives behind them, to study the nature of participation in social development and to analyse the problem and prospects of corporate –NGO partnerships in social development.
The report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter deals with the theoretical framework of the study. The second chapter provides a historical background of business philanthropy in the global and Indian context. An account of the corporate sector in Karnataka is provided in the third chapter. The fourth chapter focuses on the analysis of different dimensions of corporate philanthropy and social development in Karnataka by making use of the field data. The report concludes with a summary of the observations and their implications for policy makers, practitioners and other stakeholders. The report also throws up further area of research that can be considered in future. |
