In 2006, M.Sc. in Genetics course was started in the Department of Studies in Zoology, under the stewardship of Prof. H.A. Ranganath, which was encouraged and supported by the University of Mysore. The curriculum designed for a Master's degree in Genetics encompasses different fields of genetics, emphasizing both basic and applied aspects. Faculty members of the Department of Studies in Zoology, experts with extensive experience in the area of Genetics from other departments of the University and other institutions have also contributed to the teaching of this program. Prof. N.B. Ramachandra was the founder Chairman of the Department until 2020. Presently, Prof. S.S. Malini is the Chairperson of the Department. Starting from 2020 till date, the Department has become semi-autonomous by adopting the Flexible Choice Based Credit System. During the last sixteen years (2005-2021), 15 batches have completed this course with about 350 students, including 27 international students. Nearly 80% of the Genetics graduates have been placed well in different Universities and Research Institutions both in India and abroad. Our former students have established themselves as independent investigators in premier institutions both in India and abroad. Many of them are pursuing Post-doctoral research in leading Universities and Research Institutes around the world. The Department has started a "Postgraduate Diploma in Personalized Genomic Medicine" from 2019-20. The Department is actively involved in contemporary research in the field of Genetics and Genomics of Drosophila, microbes, and humans.
Mysuru city is located 139 km south of Bengaluru city and is well-connected by rail, road, and air. Traveling from Bengaluru to Mysuru by road takes about 3 hrs. Mysuru was the center of the erstwhile princely state with palaces and is the cultural capital of Karnataka. It is an educational hub with many research institutions. Mysuru is also the center of traditional handicrafts, known for its rosewood inlay artwork. It is known for famous tourist attractions such as Brindavan Gardens, Chamundi Hills, Royal Mysuru Palace, Zoological Gardens, Karanji lake, Kukkarhalli lake, and Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary.
In order to promote translational research, Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences (IABS) was established with the vision, keen interest and efforts of various scientists from India and abroad. The main objective of the academy is to disseminate knowledge and academic excellence in the field of biomedical sciences. The academy is registered under Societies Act 1860 of Government of India (No.2826-2011-2012). The IABS organizes CMEs, Workshops, Symposia throughout the year at different places and an Annual International Conference with the primary aim to foster collaboration between clinicians and scientists to promote biomedical research and innovations and academic excellence in the field of Biomedical Sciences.
